Stacking up to be an excellent spring for Steelhead fishing. The Steelhead fishing on the Muskegon and Manistee rivers this fall and winter has been very good, despite a very cold winter. The cold air has kept many anglers off the river leaving the Trout and Steelhead unmolested, and in the rivers. We have a lot of snow on the ground this winter, that’s going to give us a nice run off of melting snow this spring to key more Steelhead to enter the rivers. We do run the risk of blown out rivers if we get a quick thaw. The weather next week call for temps in the 50s will start some run off. THE LAST 12 We had a very good Fall Salmon fishery on all the Lake Michigan tributaries (the third coast), despite a very hot summer. Last summer was so hot the summer Steelhead (Skamania Steelhead) was not very good until late August. Normally we would see good numbers in June and the June numbers were not bad but as the river water temps heated up the fish were not there. The Trout fishing was off normal creel numbers as well last summer do to warmer water temps in the rivers. You just had to find where the trout hotels were and you were rewarded. Still a very good spring and Bug hatches were abundant on the Manistee upper and lower, AuSable, Muskegon River, and Pere Marquette River. Small Mouth Bass fishing was Hot Last Spring and was good all summer. Good old Small Mouth you can count on the Small Mouth. LOOKING FORWARD My crystal ball says good Steelhead fishing the remainder of the winter and Excellent Steelhead fishing mid fed through March. With some nice Walleye taken in March. April will be Strong for Steelhead May and June will provide very good Trout fishing once again.
